Poison Prevention Awareness Month

Kicking off the month of March may mean four leaf clovers and green beer to most of us, but it’s also Pet Poison Prevention Awareness Month! While there are resources available if your pet does ingest something they shouldn’t, the best way to keep your pet safe and healthy is to prevent ingestion and potential risk by making sure to keep medications, foods, and cleaning supplies up and out of reach of your pets. This may sound simple but as pet parents, we all know our beloved pets can be sneaky!

Be sure to keep counters clean and clear, cabinets closed (or locked if your pet can open doors), avoid leaving any food unattended, or having “poisonous” plants in your house (even if out of reach of your pets) to reduce the risk of ingestion. Check out the ASPCA Poison Control website for a list of food, plants, and household items to keep away from your pet. If you believe your pet may have ingested something, please call your vet as soon as possible or use the ASPCA Poison Control hotline if after hours!

Medication Disposal

As part of Poison Prevention Month, proper medication disposal is a very important factor! Whether its your pet’s medication or your own, proper disposal is key in keeping your home and environment as safe as possible. If you find that you have extra medications that you no longer need or that have expired, check out our blog post for suggested disposal methods as well as FDA guidelines and disposal sites!

Safe Medications

While thinking about the risks of medications in your household to your pet, you may also be wondering what household medications are safe for your pet to use - we do always recommend checking with your vet before giving any medication but check out our blog post for more info on medications that we should always be avoiding and those that are safe to give under supervision!

Fear Free Tip of the Month

In following this month’s medication theme, we wanted to talk about medications that are safe and recommended for your pet prior to vet visits - commonly called PVP’s. We often prescribe these types of medications for pets who may be stressed, fearful, or anxious in the clinic to help lower those levels and maintain a positive association with us! However, the positive association actually begins at home in giving the medications!

It’s important to not only create an enjoyable experience for them when giving the medications but while they are on it as well - we recommend testing out dosages at home prior to vet visits or stressful events to make sure your pet is on the proper and most effective dose. We also recommend making the process of giving the medications more exciting and enjoyable by using high value treats or their favorite tasty snack!
